This test is an approximate method for estimating whether organic compounds are resent in natural sand in an objectionable quantity or within permissible limit. The sand from natural source is tested as delivered.
Alkali aggregate reaction is a reaction which occurs overtime in concrete between highly alkaline cement paste and non crystalline silicon dioxide, which is found in many common aggregates. This reaction can caused expansion of altered aggregate, leading to loss of strength of concrete.
