To verify the laws of friction between solid bodies and to find the coefficient of friction between wood and various other materials
Apparatus
Wooden base sliding board
moveable in the horizontal plane, spirit level, slides of various materials,
weights.
Procedure
Take
a slider weight and place it on a wooden base, made horizontal by mean of
spirit level. With a string attached to it apply a small horizontal force. Go
on increasing this load until the slider just began to move. Now if the slider
keeps on moving with very small increases in load what do you conclude?
Now
add a load of 50 grams to the slider and find the horizontal force which is
enough to make the slider just to move. Now find F in the horizontal force
while W is total weight of the slider. Draw a graph with W on x-axis and F on
y-axis. Now find the slope of the straight line through the points. This is the
coefficient of friction between wood and material. Compare it with the
numerical value given by the formula F/W.
