Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route traverses Mt. Tayeyama, a multifaceted landscape in the Japan Alps. The route is commonly referred to as the “Root of Japan”. It is navigated using an array of automobiles with a 2400 meters change of altitude between Toyama and Nagano prefectures. The means of transport here include a ropeway, trolley buses, and cable cars.

The history of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route dates back to the 17th century, People of the Tateyama religion believed that there was a god who lived on Mt. Tateyama. Pilgrims from different parts of Japan paid the mountain a visit to see the hot water at Jigokudani that comes from the ground. They believed they were having a glimpse into the underworld. Mt. Tateyama’s high point above the valley of hell became a symbol of heaven. Those who during their lifetime climbed Mt. Tateyana believed that after death their souls would be taken to heaven.
