Whether from a new baby, middle of the night phone calls, or simply frequent waking, many people experience interrupted sleep. Researchers at Tel Aviv University have found that interrupted sleep can be as physically damaging as no sleep at all. The scientists tested memory and cognition in students who had been allowed to sleep a normal eight hours. Then, the students were woken up four times each night and asked to complete a 10-15 minute task on the computer. After only one night of interrupted sleep, the students showed significant declines in emotional and cognitive functioning. The study, published in Sleep Medicine, is one of the first to indicate a causal link instead of simply an association between interrupted sleep and cognitive functioning and mood.
