Food is brought to the ISS in 5 forms by NASA: freeze-dried, intermediate moisture, natural form, irradiated, and thermostabilized.
Freeze-dried foods: food made shelf stable by removing all available water (shrimp, vegetables)
Thermostabilized foods: Food made shelf stable by the use of heat and pressure (beef stew, soups)
Intermediate moisture: Food made shelf stable by controlling moisture content (dried beef, dried fruit)
Natural form foods: Food in the natural state (cookie, crackers, candies, pudding, fruit)
Irradiated foods: Food made shelf stable by exposure to high energy for a specific period of time (meat)
